More about running OpenSim server on a mac

http://happyclam.wikidot.com/opensim-on-mac-osx

**************
take a look at Ziah's instructions:

http://forums.osgrid.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=500&start=0
"the important Question is, do you have an PPC Mac or an Intel Mac? I never managed to get OpenSim to run on my old PPC.
On my new Intel Mac, it was just
downloading and installing Mono
http://ftp.novell.com/pub/mono/archive/ ... versal.dmg
and then open a Terminal Shell and :
cd /opt ( or whereever you want it to be installed )
svn co http://opensimulator.org/svn/opensim/trunk opensim
cd opensim
./runprebuild.sh
nant and i were ready to run a single standalone Region.
mono OpenSim.exe
to connect it to the OSGrid look here :

oh, and you might better post this in the technical support or the OpenSim Software Forum."

Getting to know OSgrid - taking a look for the ACRL Group Virtual Worlds Information

VW Name: OSgrid

VW URL: http://www.osgrid.org/

VW Sponsor/vendor: OSgrid, Inc., a California Non-profit Public Benefit Corporation.

Platform(s) (PC, Mac, Linux): All operating systems with VOIP (no lip sync supported in Freeswitch VOIP which is supported in the viewers. Whisper for Mumble open source VOIP is an add-on supporting lip sync but currently not available for mac or linux... but it’s coming)

Pricing/Fees: free open source or you can have your sim hosted by one of many hosting services.
Free self hosted regions

Using Dreamland: http://www.3dmetaverse.com/

Basic hosted $30 per month for 12,000 prims, 10 visitors, shared Intel quadcore, 512 MB memory (this is similar to the open space sims in SL)
Residential: $45 per month for 1GB memory
Professional: $90.00 per month for a 2GB region.
I have a 1GB region for which I am paying 45.00 per month through Dreamland hosting for a full island that costs $295.00 per month in SL. There was no start-up fee.
Includes hypergrid to visit other grids outside OSgrid (Sciencesim, etc.)

Building/scripting capabilities: yes
Quoting from the website:
“There are some very exciting things to look forward to in OpenSimulator v0.7 including Windlight Sharing and the ability to control Windlight Settings with scripting commands. We will also have some preliminary support for media on a prim which allows you to show flash and more complex and interactive HTML websites on prims within your simulator, I have even seen examples of people doing VNC and controlling real computers via their simulator. There are a multitude of bug fixes and simulator improvements that are part of 0.7, you can read the developer release notes here ( http://opensimulator.org/wiki/0.7_Release ). You should however be very aware that there may be bugs that the OSgrid and OpenSimulator developers are still not aware of, because OSgrid is the largest OpenSimulator Grid and testing is very important part of this grid, v0.7 has not got the proper venting it would normally be getting if OSgrid was running it, so everyone should be prepared for some unexpected things, perhaps bugs and even things not functioning as they did in 0.6.9 releases of OpenSimulator.”

Transfer of SL inventory:  still looking into this...

Prim limits: 12,000

Other limitations: not much traffic
Users currently in world: 189
Total Regions : 7750
Active users (last 30 days) : 3639
Total Users : 52809

Image capture-snapshots, machinima, etc.:
Yes, using an assortment of viewers.  I use the latest Imprudence beta viewer. For lip sync, it is currently only available for windows operating systems, but looking forward to a mac version shortly.  So there are two different VOIP packages: Freeswitch is currently supported by the viewers and does not require an add-on, and it does not support lip sync.  Whisper has recently been released for the open source Mumble VOIP and is available only for Windows at this point.
